Tambuwal: US Military Intervention Not Presented to the Senate

Former Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has revealed that the reported United States military intervention in Nigeria in December was never brought before the Senate for consideration or approval.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Monday, Tambuwal criticized the absence of legislative oversight regarding international security collaborations involving Nigeria.

He stressed that any form of cooperation between Nigeria’s government or military and foreign powers must be clearly defined, formally presented, and openly discussed—adding that such arrangements should not be limited to the United States alone.

Tambuwal stated, “As a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, these matters were not presented to us. If you ask us now, we cannot explain how it happened. At this level of governance, we should be informed of such decisions.”

He noted that events that unfolded in December, along with earlier statements from the US government, appeared to have prompted a shift in the federal government’s posture—suggesting that the ruling administration began to act more decisively.

“I believe that intervention—beginning with the statements from President Trump and the missile attack that followed—had an effect on the government. It forced them to reassess their position. You can see some positive influence on how the administration is now approaching issues,” he said.

When asked whether he supported additional military actions from the United States, Tambuwal clarified that he did not support further strikes. Instead, he advocated for diplomatic channels and structured cooperation between both nations.

“I do not want to see more attacks. What is needed is a clearer and well-defined framework between the Nigerian government and the US government for any engagements,” he concluded.
