The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has disclosed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with the clear objective of clinching the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

In an interview with Sunday Punch, Tanko said Obi’s entry into the ADC was a strategic decision that would significantly boost the party’s national appeal, insisting that the former Anambra State governor remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures.

He played down concerns over recent defections of South-East governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), arguing that Obi’s popularity is rooted in grassroots support rather than elite political structures.

“Peter Obi is a widely accepted figure. I am confident he will surpass the level of support he recorded in 2023,” Tanko said.

According to him, electoral victories are driven by the people, not by governors or political power brokers, stressing that Nigerians are increasingly determined to vote based on conviction.

“The desire for real change is coming from the masses. People want leadership that genuinely improves their lives, and Obi symbolizes that hope,” he noted.

Tanko further stated that governors no longer have the power to dictate how citizens vote, especially in an era where voters are becoming more politically conscious.

“The votes will not come from governors; they will come from ordinary Nigerians. And those Nigerians are calling for Peter Obi to lead them,” he added.

Peter Obi recently announced his defection to the ADC as part of a broader effort to unite opposition forces and build a formidable coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
