Tanko Explains Obi’s Move to ADC Ahead of 2027 Presidential Race

Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has revealed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s recent move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a calculated step aimed at securing the party’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Punch, Tanko described Obi’s transition as a strategic maneuver designed to expand the ADC’s national influence. He emphasised that Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, continues to hold significant sway in Nigerian politics.

Addressing concerns over the recent defections of South-East governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tanko argued that Obi’s appeal is deeply rooted in grassroots support rather than reliance on elite political structures.

“Peter Obi enjoys broad acceptance across the country. I am confident his backing will surpass the levels he achieved in 2023,” Tanko said.

He further highlighted that electoral outcomes are ultimately shaped by the people, not by governors or traditional power brokers. Nigerians, he stressed, are increasingly motivated to vote based on conviction and the promise of genuine change.

“The momentum for real transformation is coming from ordinary citizens. They are seeking leadership that will tangibly improve their lives, and Obi embodies that hope,” Tanko noted.

Tanko also pointed out that in today’s politically conscious era, governors no longer dictate electoral outcomes. Instead, the power to determine leadership lies firmly with the electorate.

“The support will not be dictated by governors; it will come from ordinary Nigerians. And these citizens are calling for Peter Obi to lead them,” he added.

In a broader context, Obi’s move to the ADC is part of an effort to consolidate opposition forces and build a strong coalition capable of challenging established political powers in the 2027 presidential race.
