A dramatic confrontation unfolded at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national secretariat in Abuja when key political figures from opposing factions refused to leave the party headquarters, intensifying the already tense leadership dispute.
The situation at Wadata Plaza quickly became volatile as prominent party leaders gathered at the premises while security personnel attempted to maintain order amid fears that the disagreement could escalate into a broader conflict.
According to Gossip News Now, the unfolding events highlighted the deepening divisions inside the PDP, as rival factions attempted to assert authority over the party’s leadership and activities.
Earlier in the day, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and newly elected national chairman Tanimu Turaki arrived together in a convoy. Because of the tense atmosphere surrounding the complex, the governors reportedly remained inside Bala Mohammed’s vehicle for several minutes while security officers strengthened their presence around the building.
At roughly the same time, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, was already within the secretariat compound and also refused to leave the area.
The tension had already been building earlier when Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who is aligned with Wike’s political camp, arrived at the secretariat with a group of supporters. Addressing journalists outside the complex, he dismissed the leadership structure that emerged from the party’s convention in Ibadan.
Anyanwu insisted that his faction still represented the legitimate leadership of the party and mocked the Turaki-led team formed during the convention.
Meanwhile, plans were underway for rival political meetings at the secretariat, creating a direct clash of authority within the party structure.
Meetings That Triggered the Standoff
Two sets of gatherings were expected to take place at the same venue:
- A meeting organised by the pro-Wike faction inside the National Executive Committee (NEC) Hall
- Engagements planned by the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the National Executive Committee, linked to the Turaki-led leadership
When Makinde and Bala Mohammed eventually entered the building despite security barriers, they addressed reporters and explained that the scheduled meetings had been postponed until the following day due to the rising tension.
During the exchange with journalists, Turaki declared that members of the opposing faction were no longer recognised as officials of the party, insisting that the new National Working Committee had been given a legitimate mandate.
However, the situation became more complicated when the Turaki-led group attempted to leave the premises.
At that moment, Wike reportedly pushed through the security cordon and entered the secretariat complex, a move that dramatically heightened the tension inside the building.
Following Wike’s arrival, Makinde, Bala Mohammed, and Turaki reportedly decided to remain within the premises rather than depart.
Security Intervention
As the confrontation intensified, security personnel ordered journalists and other individuals to vacate the area due to concerns that the dispute could spiral into a larger conflict.
Despite these instructions, several PDP officials and governors reportedly refused to leave the secretariat. Their position was clear: they would only exit the premises if Wike also agreed to depart.
Commentary and Analysis
The standoff at Wadata Plaza illustrates how deeply the PDP’s internal leadership crisis has divided the party. When rival factions refuse to leave the party headquarters and schedule competing meetings at the same location, it reflects a struggle for legitimacy and control.
Political analysts believe the crisis goes beyond personalities and reflects competing visions about the direction of the party ahead of future national elections.
If unresolved, the dispute could significantly weaken the PDP’s internal unity and public image as a major opposition force. However, some observers argue that intense political battles sometimes lead to restructuring and clearer leadership within political organisations.
For now, the events at the party secretariat have become a powerful symbol of the PDP’s ongoing struggle to redefine its leadership and restore internal stability.
