Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, has delivered a tough message to members of the party, warning that betrayal of the platform that built them could eventually return with painful consequences.
During a Thursday meeting with the Forum of State PDP Chairmen, Damagum urged party stakeholders to stop actions capable of worsening divisions within the opposition party. His remarks were directed at those he believes are undermining the PDP from within at a time when unity is badly needed.
According to Gossip News Now, the PDP chairman stressed that disloyalty to an institution that helped shape political careers should not be taken lightly. He suggested that some individuals have allowed themselves to be influenced into acts of treachery, but added that there is still room for reflection and correction before more damage is done.
In his remarks, Damagum made it clear that no act of betrayal goes without consequence. He said those enjoying temporary advantage today should remember that life has a way of returning people’s actions to them. He also indicated that justice, conscience and accountability cannot be escaped forever.
The PDP chairman further tied his message to faith, saying that whenever he chooses a God-centered path, some people wrongly interpret it as weakness. Yet, he maintained that human conduct will ultimately be judged by God, and that wisdom should guide party members before matters spiral further.
Even amid crisis, Damagum rejected the growing narrative that the PDP has faded into political irrelevance. He argued that the party remains at the center of national political conversation, insisting that no one keeps discussing an organization that no longer matters.
To him, the continued attention on the PDP is evidence that the party is still active, visible and politically significant. He expressed confidence that the opposition platform still has the strength to overcome its internal disputes while also responding to the wider problems facing Nigerians.
Damagum also shifted his attention beyond internal party matters to the national political environment, warning against any attempt to bully or silence opposition voices. He said democracy must not become a space where those in authority intimidate others simply because they currently occupy positions of power.
He emphasized that Nigeria belongs to every citizen, not just those in government, and insisted that opposition figures have every right to lawfully pursue their political goals. In his view, public office is only temporary, and anyone who abuses power should remember that such authority does not last forever.
Rather than placing the karma warning at the center of only party discipline, Damagum appeared to broaden it into a larger moral message: whether within the PDP or in government circles, actions carry consequences. His statement was not just about party loyalty, but also about humility, restraint and responsibility in the use of influence.
His latest comments come at a delicate moment for the PDP, as the party continues to battle internal disagreements while trying to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of future electoral contests. The remarks reflect both frustration and an attempt to rally members around discipline and survival.
Commentary and Analysis
Damagum’s intervention appears aimed at two audiences at once. First, he is speaking to PDP insiders whose actions may be deepening the party’s divisions. Second, he is sending a warning to external political forces that may believe the opposition can be weakened through pressure or intimidation.
The tone of his remarks suggests that the PDP leadership is trying to reassert control over the party’s internal narrative. By insisting that the PDP is still alive and politically relevant, Damagum is attempting to counter public perception that the party’s recurring crises have reduced its strength.
His reference to karma and divine judgment also adds a moral and emotional dimension to the speech. Instead of making only a procedural or political argument, he framed loyalty and betrayal as issues with lasting consequences. That approach may resonate with party loyalists, but it also shows how serious the current mistrust within the PDP has become.
Ultimately, Damagum’s statement paints a picture of a party still wrestling with internal strain, yet unwilling to accept political extinction. Whether those words lead to reconciliation inside the PDP remains to be seen, but the message itself was unmistakable: loyalty matters, power is temporary, and every action has a price.
