Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged members of the popular Obidient movement to maintain discipline and civility in political discourse, particularly in their interactions with figures associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that abusive comments directed at political leaders do not reflect the values of the movement he inspires.

Obi Distances Movement From Online Abuse

During a meeting with supporters at the movement’s secretariat on Tuesday, Obi addressed the rising tension surrounding comments targeting key personalities within the ADC alliance.

He cautioned that individuals responsible for insulting political leaders should not be regarded as genuine supporters of the Obidient movement.

According to him, some people deliberately misuse the movement’s identity to create conflict and damage its reputation.

“Not Real Supporters,” Obi Says

Obi insisted that those spreading insults or derogatory remarks online are impostors hiding behind the Obidient label.

He maintained that authentic supporters of the movement are guided by principles of respect, tolerance, and constructive engagement.

According to him, personal attacks have never been part of his political philosophy.

Emphasis on Respect Within the Coalition

The former governor also emphasised the importance of maintaining cordial relationships within the political coalition he now associates with.

He noted that several leaders in the ADC are individuals he holds in high regard, describing them as respected colleagues and longtime associates.

Among those he mentioned were Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, Liyel Imoke, John Odigie-Oyegun, and Rauf Aregbesola.

Obi Speaks About Personal Relationships

Obi highlighted his longstanding relationships with many of the leaders in the coalition.

He explained that these figures are not political enemies but partners and respected individuals with whom he shares mutual respect.

Because of this, he said it would be inconsistent with his character to engage in personal attacks against them.

Warning Against Misuse of the Obidient Identity

The former presidential candidate warned that certain individuals may be attempting to tarnish the Obidient brand.

According to him, misrepresenting the movement through hostile or divisive rhetoric undermines its core values.

He therefore urged supporters to remain focused on promoting positive political engagement rather than engaging in confrontational exchanges.

Call to Focus on National Challenges

Obi used the opportunity to redirect attention toward the country’s pressing issues.

He encouraged supporters to concentrate on meaningful conversations about Nigeria’s development rather than online quarrels.

Among the concerns he highlighted were:

  • the growing number of out-of-school children
  • rising levels of poverty and hunger
  • unemployment across the country
  • worsening insecurity and kidnappings

According to him, these are the issues that deserve public attention and collective effort.

Advocacy for Issue-Based Politics

Obi reiterated that politics should be used as a tool to solve national problems rather than deepen divisions among citizens.

He urged supporters to adopt an approach focused on ideas, policies, and national progress.

By doing so, he said, political engagement can contribute meaningfully to improving the country’s future.

Commentary and Analysis

Peter Obi’s message reflects an attempt to shape the tone of political discourse within his support base.

The Obidient movement gained prominence during the 2023 elections, largely driven by grassroots enthusiasm and strong social media engagement.

However, the influence of online platforms also means that disagreements and political tensions can quickly escalate into hostile exchanges.

By publicly discouraging insults directed at coalition partners, Obi appears to be positioning himself as an advocate of respectful political dialogue.

For political observers, the statement may also signal an effort to maintain unity within the emerging alliances that could play significant roles in Nigeria’s future political landscape.
