Dan Nwanyanwu, a former presidential candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), has raised concerns about the growing calls urging former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television, Nwanyanwu questioned the motives behind the renewed political pressure on the former Nigerian leader.

He argued that some of the individuals advocating Jonathan’s return to the political arena may not necessarily be acting in his best interest.

According to Gossip News Now, Nwanyanwu suggested that the push for Jonathan’s potential candidacy is being driven by political actors attempting to correct the consequences of their previous decisions.

The ZLP chieftain maintained that many of those currently encouraging Jonathan to re-enter the presidential race were the same individuals who failed to stand by him during the 2015 general election, when he lost his re-election bid.

Nwanyanwu therefore urged the former president to approach such calls cautiously, warning that the political environment surrounding the discussion may not be entirely sincere.

Advice to the Former President

While responding to questions about whether Jonathan should consider running again, Nwanyanwu revealed that he had not yet held direct discussions with the former president regarding the matter.

However, he indicated that he plans to meet with Jonathan in the near future.

During the interview, he offered advice suggesting that the former president should take time before making any decision about participating in the 2027 presidential contest.

He remarked that the same individuals who once distanced themselves from Jonathan are now encouraging him to return to national politics, a situation he described as ironic.

In his view, the renewed calls appear to be motivated by attempts to repair political damage rather than genuine support for Jonathan’s leadership.

Concerns Over Political Practices

Beyond the discussion about Jonathan’s possible candidacy, Nwanyanwu also addressed broader issues affecting Nigeria’s political system.

He argued that many of the country’s political challenges stem from a lack of adherence to party regulations and constitutional agreements among political actors.

According to him, internal party rules and political arrangements are often ignored, which contributes to ongoing instability within the political landscape.

He specifically mentioned the issue of power rotation, noting that such agreements are frequently disregarded despite their importance in maintaining political balance.

Regional Power Debate

Nwanyanwu further stated that he believes the southern region of Nigeria should retain the presidency for another four-year term in line with earlier political understandings.

However, he acknowledged that expressing such views sometimes attracts criticism from political observers who may interpret the position as support for the current administration.

The former presidential candidate noted that debates about power rotation remain sensitive, particularly as political parties begin to position themselves for the next election cycle.

Commentary and Analysis

The renewed discussion about a possible Jonathan comeback reflects the shifting alliances and strategic calculations already emerging ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Political analysts note that Jonathan remains a significant figure in Nigerian politics due to his previous tenure as president and his reputation for conceding defeat peacefully during the 2015 election.

However, calls for his return may also reflect deeper divisions within political parties searching for consensus candidates capable of uniting different factions.

Nwanyanwu’s comments highlight a broader concern about political consistency and loyalty within Nigeria’s political system. His warning suggests that any potential return by Jonathan would require careful consideration of both political motives and the wider national context.

As discussions about the next presidential race gradually intensify, the role of influential political figures such as Jonathan is likely to remain a topic of national debate.
