Three nations have already booked their places in the Round of 16 at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, with Algeria becoming the latest team to seal qualification following an eventful Sunday of matches.

Algeria secured their advancement with a narrow 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Group E. Captain Riyad Mahrez calmly converted a penalty to score the only goal of the match, guiding the Desert Foxes to their second consecutive win.

The win puts Algeria on six points from two games, mathematically guaranteeing their place in the knockout stages. Burkina Faso and Sudan both remain on three points, while Equatorial Guinea is still seeking its first point. Algeria’s experience in the tournament is evident, having previously lifted the AFCON trophy in 1990 and 2019.

With this result, Algeria joins Nigeria and Egypt as the only teams so far to have secured progression to the Round of 16.

Sunday also saw Sudan claim a surprise 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in Casablanca. The decisive moment came in the 74th minute when Coco accidentally scored an own goal, giving Sudan a vital win and keeping their qualification hopes alive.

In Group F, Mozambique staged a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against Gabon in Agadir. Gabon initially took the lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang just before halftime, but goals from Bangal, Geny Catamo, and Calila turned the game in Mozambique’s favour despite a late Gabon response.

Later in Marrakesh, Ivory Coast and Cameroon played out a 1-1 draw in a key Group F encounter, leaving both sides on four points from two games as the group stage continues.
