The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has met with a delegation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), led by its President, Afam Josiah Osigwe (SAN), at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, to discuss issues surrounding the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991.
According to a statement released on Thursday by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the meeting provided an opportunity for in-depth discussions on matters of mutual interest, particularly the need for stronger synergy between the Police and the legal community in promoting the rule of law and enhancing public trust.
“The visit, which centred on issues surrounding the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, provided an opportunity for robust deliberations on the need for synergy between the Police and the Bar in upholding the rule of law and promoting public confidence,” Hundeyin said.
Temporary Suspension of Enforcement
The Police clarified that there is no court order currently restraining it from enforcing the tinted glass law. However, in consideration of the interests of Nigerians and respect for the NBA, the Force has temporarily suspended enforcement of the Act pending the outcome of the Motion on Notice scheduled for October 16, 2025, at the Federal High Court, Warri, Delta State.
“The Nigeria Police Force, while noting that there is no clear court order stopping the enforcement of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 1991, has, out of consideration for the interest of Nigerians and regard for the Nigerian Bar Association, temporarily suspended the enforcement,” the statement read.
Police–NBA Committee Inaugurated
To further strengthen collaboration, the IGP announced the inauguration of a joint Police–NBA committee aimed at improving coordination between law enforcement agencies and the legal profession.
“To enhance collaboration between the Police and the Bar, a Police–NBA committee has been inaugurated,” Hundeyin noted.
Motorists Advised to Regularize Documents
The Police urged vehicle owners and motorists to seize this opportunity to regularize their vehicle documentation and ensure compliance with all laws governing the use of tinted or shaded vehicle glasses in Nigeria.
“All vehicle owners and motorists are urged to take advantage of this window to regularise their documentation and ensure full compliance with all relevant laws regulating the use of motor vehicles with shaded or tinted glasses,” the statement added.
IGP Reaffirms Commitment to Fairness and Human Rights
IGP Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ rights in the enforcement of existing laws.
“The IGP reiterates the resolve of the Force to enforce all extant laws with fairness, transparency, and respect for the rights of all citizens while maintaining effective collaboration with critical stakeholders in the administration of justice,” Hundeyin concluded.
