Fresh reports on Monday suggest that the impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, may stall, following behind-the-scenes interventions reportedly involving President Bola Tinubu.
Recall that last Thursday, 26 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly, largely aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, initiated impeachment motions against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, citing alleged gross misconduct.
A prominent Niger Delta elder and Ijaw leader, who spoke to Vanguard, expressed optimism that the crisis would soon be resolved.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel for the governor. Light always prevails over darkness and impunity,” the elder said.
He added that efforts were ongoing behind the scenes to de-escalate the situation but declined to provide further details.
“We are taking several measures in the background, which I cannot disclose. But I can assure you that the impeachment process will not succeed. By God’s grace, all these issues will be resolved,” he stated.
Tinubu Reportedly Orders Suspension
Unconfirmed reports indicate that President Tinubu, who also serves as APC’s national leader, has instructed the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately suspend all impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy.
According to Vanguard, the President also directed the lawmakers to consult with the National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwatda, for further guidance.
Tinubu was reportedly said to have cautioned the legislators against actions that could further polarize the state.
