As political preparations gradually shift toward the next general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has moved to strengthen internal unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC). The president recently inaugurated a strategic committee tasked with resolving disputes within the ruling party while improving mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 polls.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that the committee’s inauguration took place in Lagos.
According to the statement, the new body—named the Strategy, Conflict Resolution and Mobilisation Committee—is designed to handle two major responsibilities. First, it will work to reconcile factions within the party. Second, it will help the APC develop a structured plan to expand grassroots engagement nationwide as the next election cycle approaches.
Leadership of the committee has been entrusted to Mai Mala Buni, the Governor of Yobe State, while respected legal practitioner and former APC National Legal Adviser Muiz Banire will serve as the committee’s secretary.
Membership of the committee reflects a broad representation of influential figures across the party. Several governors, senior government officials, and key political stakeholders were selected to ensure that different interests within the APC are adequately represented.
Among those serving on the committee are Senator Adamu Aliero and several state governors including AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta).
Additional members include Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, and former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello.
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated team, Governor Buni expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for entrusting them with what he described as a critical assignment for the future of the party.
He explained that the committee intends to carry out extensive consultations with party leaders, grassroots members and stakeholders across the country in order to craft a long-term strategy for party cohesion and expansion.
Buni also indicated that resolving grievances within the APC would be one of the committee’s immediate priorities. According to him, restoring confidence among members who feel marginalized or dissatisfied will be essential for strengthening the party.
In addition, the committee plans to take early action whenever signs of internal disputes appear. By identifying potential conflicts before they escalate, the team hopes to prevent issues capable of weakening the party ahead of national elections.
The committee chairman further encouraged members to focus on the broader interests of the APC rather than individual political ambitions while carrying out their duties.
Commentary and Analysis
The formation of the strategy and reconciliation committee reflects the ruling party’s awareness that internal unity often determines electoral success in Nigeria’s highly competitive political landscape. Large political parties frequently face internal divisions caused by competing ambitions, regional interests, and leadership struggles.
By assembling a committee composed of governors, ministers and influential party figures, the APC leadership appears to be building a mechanism for resolving disputes before they grow into larger crises. This approach may also help the party consolidate support in different regions of the country.
The initiative also aligns with earlier remarks made by President Tinubu during the APC’s 15th National Executive Committee meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. At that gathering, the president emphasized that cohesion within the party would play a decisive role in determining its success in the 2027 elections.
If effectively implemented, the committee’s work could strengthen internal discipline and improve grassroots mobilisation. However, its success will depend largely on whether party leaders are willing to prioritize collective stability over personal political interests.
