The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken aim at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his frequent holiday trips, arguing that such absences reveal a lack of empathy toward Nigerians enduring economic and social hardships. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday.
According to Abdullahi, Tinubu’s travel schedule contrasts sharply with the conduct of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who, he noted, remained in the country during times of national crises. “He didn’t abandon the country. He didn’t disappear when serious problems arose,” Abdullahi said, highlighting Jonathan’s hands-on approach during periods of instability.
The ADC criticized the APC government for downplaying the severity of current economic struggles. Abdullahi argued that while official statements claim improvements, ordinary Nigerians continue to face mounting difficulties. “The level of hardship Nigerians are going through today is unprecedented, but even worse is the government’s refusal to acknowledge the reality most citizens are facing,” he stated.
He added that persistent reassurances from the administration—telling citizens to “hold on because things will soon improve”—have failed to reflect the everyday realities confronting millions. Abdullahi stressed that nearly three years into Tinubu’s administration, the government still operates with a campaigning mindset rather than addressing pressing national issues.
Highlighting a perceived lack of leadership sensitivity, Abdullahi remarked, “The insensitivity is shocking. There is little concern for what people are going through. This president continues to leave the country whenever he likes, even during periods of crisis.”
In contrast, the ADC praised Jonathan’s commitment to remaining present and engaged during critical moments. Abdullahi emphasized that unlike the current administration, Jonathan’s leadership style demonstrated responsibility and solidarity with citizens, particularly in times of national threat.
