Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about her childhood experience in London, revealing she once felt unhappy about being African.
Speaking at the recent Unstoppable Africans event, the Afrobeats star said her perspective has since changed as the global success of Afrobeats has empowered her and many others to take pride in their heritage.
According to Savage, Afrobeats has not only proved doubters wrong but continues to break boundaries despite limited resources and support from the start.
“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world. We created it with nothing — no support, no infrastructure, no real belief even from our own people at first,” she said.
“I remember growing up in London and I was not happy being African. But now I’m so proud because of how big Afrobeats is growing.”
She dismissed claims that Afrobeats is losing momentum, insisting the genre is stronger than ever, filling stadiums and dominating charts worldwide.
Savage emphasized that Africa’s influence is only rising and that Africans remain “unstoppable.”
“They thought Afrobeats would fade after a moment, but we are still here. We’re not slowing down,” she added.
“We are Africans and we are unstoppable.”
