Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Ben Davies will undergo surgery on a fractured ankle, putting his participation in Wales’ World Cup play-off later this spring in serious doubt.

Davies sustained the injury early during Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham United. The 32-year-old Wales captain required oxygen on the pitch before being stretchered off just 19 minutes into the match at the London Stadium.

In a brief statement, Spurs said: “We can confirm that Ben Davies will undergo surgery today for a fracture of his left ankle.” No return date has been provided.

The setback could see Davies miss Wales’ World Cup play-off semi-final against Bosnia-Herzegovina at Cardiff City Stadium on 26 March. Should Wales advance, they would face either Northern Ireland or Italy in the final on 31 March.

Davies’ injury adds to Tottenham’s mounting fitness concerns during a challenging season in north London. Spurs sit 14th in the Premier League, having won just seven of 22 matches, increasing pressure on head coach Thomas Frank, who took charge last June.

Frustration among supporters boiled over during the closing stages of the West Ham defeat, with sections of travelling fans chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning.” While the club has held internal discussions about Frank’s future, officials insist he remains in charge ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund.

Meanwhile, at West Ham, the mood is very different as the club moves to halt plans for striker Callum Wilson to leave this month.

Wilson had been in advanced talks to terminate his contract early, which runs until summer, allowing him to depart as a free agent. However, those discussions have now been paused following intervention from senior club officials.

The decision follows Wilson’s dramatic late winner against Tottenham on Saturday, a goal that proved decisive in the London derby.

Sources at the club believe letting the 33-year-old go at this stage would be counterproductive, with goals at a premium and Premier League survival still uncertain. Wilson joined West Ham on a free transfer last summer and has netted five goals in 19 appearances.

His prospects had appeared uncertain following the January signings of Pablo Felipe and Tati Castellanos, prompting both parties to consider an amicable exit. For now, those plans have been shelved, with Wilson expected to remain at the London Stadium through the remainder of the season.
