Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has sealed a season-long loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor, the Premier League side confirmed on Friday.
The 29-year-old Cameroon international, who arrived at Old Trafford from Inter Milan in 2023 for €51m plus add-ons, leaves after a difficult spell in England marked by inconsistency and costly errors.
Onana was brought in as a long-term replacement for David de Gea, but despite helping United lift the FA Cup in his debut season, his performances came under heavy scrutiny, particularly in European competitions where high-profile mistakes drew criticism.
His second season began in similar fashion. A hamstring injury sidelined him during pre-season, and an error in his first competitive appearance contributed to United’s shock Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town.
The deadline-day arrival of Senne Lammens from Antwerp for €21m plus add-ons pushed Onana further down the pecking order, ultimately paving the way for his exit.
Confirming the deal, United said in a statement:
“André Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish André good luck.”
Onana’s Career So Far
- Ajax (2015–2022): Established himself as one of Europe’s standout goalkeepers, winning three Eredivisie titles, reaching the 2017 Europa League final, and starring in Ajax’s 2019 Champions League semi-final run. His career was briefly interrupted by a nine-month doping ban in 2021, which he claimed was due to mistakenly taking his wife’s medication.
- Inter Milan (2022–2023): Became first-choice keeper, lifting the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, while helping Inter reach the 2023 Champions League final, where they narrowly lost 1–0 to Manchester City.
- Manchester United (2023–2025): Signed as De Gea’s successor but struggled for form and consistency, leading to his loan exit after two seasons.
At Trabzonspor, Onana is expected to become the club’s No. 1 goalkeeper as they push for domestic success and aim to make an impact in Europe.
For the Cameroonian shot-stopper, the move represents an opportunity to regain the consistency and confidence that once made him one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in world football.
Meanwhile, Manchester United turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium—their first major test since the reshuffle in goal.
