Trump Says U.S. Will “Run” Venezuela Until New Leadership Emerges

Following a dramatic U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States intends to oversee Venezuela’s affairs as the country transitions to new leadership.

At a press event on Saturday, Trump said the U.S. could not risk a return of leadership that oppresses the Venezuelan people, adding that Washington will “run the country until such time that we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition.” He stressed that this temporary involvement aims to prevent a repeat of past instability.

Trump also commented on Venezuela’s oil industry, describing it as deteriorated. He pledged that major U.S. oil companies would invest billions of dollars to rehabilitate the sector and generate economic benefits for the nation.

The president warned Venezuelan political and military elites that anyone opposing progress could face consequences similar to Maduro’s, reinforcing the message that change has begun. “Venezuelan people are free again,” he said, and added that the United States is now “a safer” and “prouder” nation following the mission.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, standing with Trump, described the operation as a “massive joint military and law enforcement raid” executed with precision. While his remarks included strong language about Maduro’s failure, officials framed the mission as part of a broader strategy to promote U.S. interests and stability in the region.

The plan to govern Venezuela temporarily has drawn international attention and raised questions about what will follow in the coming months, including how leadership will transition and how the country’s sovereignty will be respected in the meantime.
