Fresh tensions have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following an announcement by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) regarding a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled to take place in Abuja.
According to Gossip News Now, Turaki—who emerged as National Chairman during the party’s Ibadan National Convention—revealed that his faction intends to hold its inaugural NEC session at the party’s national secretariat located in Wadata Plaza.
The planned meeting is expected to bring together key stakeholders of the party, including governors, federal lawmakers, and prominent figures who have long been associated with the PDP.
Turaki made the announcement shortly after visiting the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Garki, where he submitted a formal petition concerning the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.
In the petition, Turaki accused Samuel Anyanwu, who is recognised by a rival faction as the party’s National Secretary, along with other individuals, of undermining the party’s stability.
Despite the internal tensions, Turaki insisted that preparations for the meeting would proceed without disruption. He stated that arrangements had already been made to ensure the safety of those expected to attend.
He also explained that the police authorities had been informed about the event in advance in order to provide adequate security coverage for the gathering.
During his interaction with journalists, Turaki emphasized that the meeting would serve as an important platform for discussing key issues affecting the party’s future direction.
However, the situation has become more complicated due to a parallel plan announced by another faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.
This opposing group has also scheduled Board of Trustees (BoT) and NEC meetings on the same day and at the same location—Wadata Plaza, the party’s national headquarters.
Details of the rival meetings were reportedly circulated through an official notice issued by Samuel Anyanwu, who continues to act as secretary for that faction.
The notice indicated that the sessions were necessary due to pressing matters requiring urgent deliberation among party leaders.
The overlapping schedules have intensified the PDP’s internal conflict, as both factions appear determined to assert their authority within the party structure.
Commentary and Analysis
The latest developments highlight the depth of the leadership crisis currently affecting the Peoples Democratic Party.
Holding two separate leadership meetings at the same venue on the same day could potentially escalate tensions within the party and create confusion about which faction holds legitimate authority.
Political analysts believe the dispute reflects broader struggles over control of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. As Nigeria’s main opposition party, the PDP faces significant pressure to resolve its internal disagreements if it hopes to remain a credible alternative to the ruling government.
The involvement of security agencies also underscores the seriousness of the conflict, as party leaders appear determined to protect their respective gatherings from disruption.
Ultimately, how the situation unfolds at Wadata Plaza may determine whether the PDP can regain unity or continue down a path of deeper factional division.
