The political landscape in Zamfara State has experienced another shift following the resignation of two lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress in the State House of Assembly.
The legislators involved are Shamsudeen Hassan Basko, who represents Talata-Mafara North, and Nura Dahiru, representing Birnin-Magaji. Both lawmakers announced their decisions through separate letters submitted to the leadership of the state legislature.
During a legislative sitting, the Speaker of the House, Bilyaminu Moriki, officially presented the resignation notices to members of the assembly. The development immediately drew attention to the ongoing internal tensions within the ruling party in the state.
In explaining his decision, Basko pointed to prolonged disagreements and leadership challenges within the party structure. He suggested that persistent internal disputes and what he described as the neglect of party members across different levels of the organisation made it difficult for him to continue his political activities under the APC platform.
The lawmaker also indicated that the party’s internal direction no longer reflected the political ideals he believed should guide his representation of constituents. According to his statement, unresolved factional conflicts and dissatisfaction among grassroots members were major factors behind his departure.
Meanwhile, Dahiru framed his decision around his desire to better represent the interests of the people who elected him. In his resignation message, he suggested that stepping away from the APC would allow him to align himself with political goals that more closely reflect the expectations of his constituents.
Shortly after announcing his resignation, Dahiru revealed his decision to join the Peoples Democratic Party, signalling an immediate shift in political allegiance within the Zamfara Assembly.
Gossip News Now reports that the dual resignations have added to ongoing discussions about political realignments in the state as parties continue to reposition themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
Commentary and Analysis
Political defections are not uncommon in Nigeria’s evolving party system, especially when internal disagreements emerge within major parties. Analysts say such movements often reflect deeper structural challenges within party organisations, including leadership disputes, competition for influence, and dissatisfaction among grassroots members.
The departure of the two lawmakers could also influence the balance of political alliances within the Zamfara State legislature. When legislators switch party affiliations, it can reshape legislative dynamics and affect how political blocs cooperate or compete on key policy decisions.
Observers note that if internal conflicts within parties remain unresolved, further defections could occur, potentially altering political alignments not only within the state assembly but also across the wider political environment in Zamfara.
