U.S. Claims Capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

The United States has declared that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are now in U.S. custody after a dramatic military operation against Venezuela — a move that marks a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Caracas.

President Donald Trump announced the development in a post on his social media platform, saying that U.S. forces conducted a successful large‑scale mission that resulted in Maduro’s capture and removal from Venezuelan territory. Trump wrote that the operation was carried out alongside U.S. law enforcement agencies, and that further details would be shared at a press conference scheduled at his residence in Florida.

The capture follows months of heightened pressure by the U.S. government on Maduro, including an earlier decision to raise the reward for information leading to his arrest to a record $50 million, citing alleged ties to international drug trafficking networks.

Maduro had been indicted in the United States in 2020 on charges related to drug trafficking and conspiracy, alongside other high‑level Venezuelan officials. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has since confirmed that criminal charges are pending against both Maduro and his wife, who are expected to face trial in federal court.

The military action — part of what U.S. forces called Operation Absolute Resolve — was carried out early in January and involved coordinated strikes and a targeted raid to seize Maduro. Venezuelan opposition figures welcomed the development, while Maduro’s supporters and foreign governments condemned it as a violation of sovereignty.

In a related but separate development, U.S. Congressman Riley Moore has hinted that additional U.S. airstrikes may take place in Nigeria as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts. Moore said that these actions are not intended to destabilise Nigeria but rather to support security and protect civilians amid violence linked to extremist groups.

Moore stressed that recent strikes — including those carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities — were meant to restore hope to affected communities and strengthen confidence among vulnerable populations. He emphasised that the focus remains on combating terrorism while safeguarding civilians.
