The United States has announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, marking a dramatic escalation in Washington’s long-running confrontation with the South American leader.
The development comes months after the U.S. government increased the reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million, citing allegations linking him to international drug trafficking networks.
Maduro had earlier been indicted by the United States in 2020 during former President Donald Trump’s first term, alongside several top Venezuelan government officials.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social account on Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Maduro had been apprehended and removed from Venezuela.
“The United States of America has successfully executed a major operation against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro,” Trump wrote. “He and his wife have been captured and flown out of the country.”
According to Trump, the operation was carried out in collaboration with U.S. law enforcement agencies, with further details expected to be released.
“A news conference will be held today at 11 a.m. at Mar-a-Lago,” he added.
U.S. Lawmaker Hints at More Airstrikes in Nigeria
In a related development, United States Congressman Riley Moore has indicated that additional U.S. military airstrikes may be carried out in Nigeria as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
In a post shared on his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, Moore said President Trump has no intention of destabilising Nigeria, stressing that the focus remains on combating terrorism and protecting civilians.
He described the recent U.S. airstrikes conducted on Christmas Day—in coordination with Nigerian authorities—as a positive intervention that has restored hope to affected communities.
“President Trump is not bringing war to Nigeria,” Moore wrote. “He is bringing peace and security, especially to thousands of Christians facing horrific violence and death.”
He added that the strikes against Islamic State-linked militants had strengthened confidence among vulnerable populations across parts of the country.
