Abdul Ningi, the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central, has condemned the United States for allegedly violating Nigeria’s territorial integrity by carrying out airstrikes in the country’s Northwest region on Christmas Day.
Speaking on Arise News on Thursday, Ningi argued that the US military action was a clear infringement on Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Gossip News Now recalls that under the directive of former US President Donald Trump, airstrikes were conducted against a suspected terrorist enclave in Sokoto State on Christmas Day. The strikes followed Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) in response to reports of widespread persecution and violence against Christians.
Trump had warned that the US Defence Department was prepared to take military action if the Nigerian government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
Reacting to the airstrikes, Ningi stated, “The United States military hitting our land with missiles is, in my view, a violation of our sovereignty. They breached the territorial integrity of this country, and we need a full explanation.”
The Bauchi Senator also criticized the exclusion of the Nigerian Senate from the diplomatic discussions that preceded the US military operations in Sokoto.
During a debate on the strikes—which reportedly killed several terrorists—Ningi warned that repeated unilateral actions by foreign powers could set a dangerous precedent, potentially inviting other nations to act against Nigeria without proper procedures.
He further argued that the Sokoto operation violated the United Nations Charter, emphasizing the potential risks for lawmakers if such incidents continue.
“If we allow this to continue, the American military is not the only powerful force in the world. If the Russians, Germans, French, or even UN forces wanted action and Nigeria refused, they could act. Leaders of our Senate, including President Godswill Akpabio, could one day be targeted if we pass laws that antagonize any powerful country,” Ningi cautioned.
