US Immigration Detains Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Over Visa Irregularities

Former Ghanaian Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been taken into custody by U.S. immigration authorities as he continues to face legal complications back home, including corruption-related charges.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) records, the 66-year-old former minister — who served between 2017 and 2024 — is currently detained at an immigration facility in Virginia.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives confirmed that he was detained on Tuesday due to concerns over the validity and status of his stay in the United States. They explained that he had applied for a visa extension after undergoing medical treatment, including prostate cancer surgery.

“His U.S. legal team is actively engaging with ICE and anticipates a swift resolution,” the lawyers stated, adding that Ofori-Atta is cooperating fully with U.S. authorities.

The former finance minister has been wanted in Ghana since February 2025, when he was declared a fugitive. He was later formally charged with corruption in November 2025. He has not set foot in Ghana since January of that year.

The allegations against him are tied to his time in office under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, during which he spearheaded controversial tax initiatives and oversaw key negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

His legal team did not indicate when he may be released from U.S. custody, nor whether he intends to return to Ghana to confront the charges against him.
