Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has dismissed speculation linking him to a potential bout with British rising star Moses Itauma, insisting the young fighter is not yet ready for such a challenge.
Usyk, who currently holds all five major world titles, made the clarification during an interview with Ready To Fight, where he expressed admiration for Itauma’s talent but made it clear that a fight between them is not on the cards.
“No, I won’t fight Itauma. He’s young — always teasing me. And he said himself he doesn’t hit grandpas,” Usyk said with a laugh.
At 38, the Ukrainian boxing legend remains one of the most accomplished heavyweights of his era. His last fight came in July, when he delivered a fifth-round knockout victory over Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium. Since then, Usyk has been recovering from a back injury that temporarily sidelined him from competition.
The champion confirmed that he does not expect to return to the ring until 2026 but emphasized that retirement is not yet in his plans.
“I’ll fight until I’m 41,” Usyk said. “After that, I’ll build a sports academy — a place where I can train and help others train.”
While his next opponent remains uncertain, talks are reportedly ongoing for a possible WBO title defence against the winner of the Joseph Parker vs. Fabio Wardley matchup. However, no official announcement has been made.
The Itauma rumours gained traction after the 20-year-old British prospect delivered a sensational first-round knockout over Dillian Whyte on August 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — a performance that impressed Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh, who publicly floated the idea of an Usyk-Itauma fight.
Itauma, unbeaten in 13 fights with 11 knockouts, said he would welcome the opportunity, calling it a “win-win” scenario even if he were to lose.
For now, however, Usyk remains focused on recovery and future plans — determined to extend his storied career for at least three more years before hanging up his gloves.
