Imo State Governor and Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, has paid a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor Alex Otti, clarifying that the engagement had no political undertones.
The visit came just days after Henry Ikoh, an ally of Uzodimma and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also met with Otti and publicly commended his administration for what he described as notable development in Abia State.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Uzodimma dismissed speculation of hidden political motives, explaining that the visit was a New Year goodwill gesture in line with the festive spirit.
According to him, governors of the South East remain focused on collective regional development, regardless of differences in political party affiliation.
“My visit today is purely a courtesy call,” Uzodimma said. “I came to wish the Governor a happy New Year, pray with him, and acknowledge the good work he is doing for the people of Abia State.”
He stressed that cooperation among South East governors was essential for the progress of the region, adding that his role as chairman of the regional governors’ forum requires regular engagement with his colleagues.
“We are determined to develop the South East, and collaboration is the only way to achieve that goal,” he said. “It is my responsibility to consult, exchange ideas, and agree on how best to improve the lives of our people.”
Uzodimma further stated that the governors were united in ensuring the South East remained firmly integrated within the Nigerian federation.
“All five governors of the South East are committed to keeping the region fully part of Nigeria, and that is what we are working towards,” he added.
The Imo governor, who also serves as Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in the South East and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, praised Otti for what he described as sound governance and visible progress in Abia State.
In his response, Governor Otti thanked Uzodimma for the visit and equally downplayed any political interpretation, noting that while politics may come up in discussions, governance remains the priority.
“This wasn’t a political visit,” Otti said. “However, as politicians, discussions may naturally touch on politics. What matters most is understanding that government operates as one system — federal, state, and local.”
Otti cautioned against equating party differences with opposition, stressing that disagreement within government structures does not amount to disloyalty.
“Belonging to different political parties doesn’t make one an opponent of government,” he explained. “You can disagree, debate, and still be part of the final decision once it is taken.”
He reaffirmed Abia State’s place within the federal structure, describing the visit as a simple exchange of New Year goodwill.
Otti, the only sitting governor elected on the platform of the Labour Party, continues to draw interest from multiple political parties seeking to court him. Reports indicate that former Senate President and PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, has made efforts to persuade Otti to join the PDP.
The APC and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have also been linked to similar overtures. However, Otti has repeatedly stated that he remains committed to the Labour Party, noting that he would only consider alternatives if the party’s leadership crisis becomes irreparable.
Uzodimma was accompanied on the visit by former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim, while Abia State’s Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, and other senior government officials were also in attendance.
