Venezuela Establishes Special Commission To Negotiate Maduro’s Release

Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, on Sunday announced the formation of a special high-level committee tasked with negotiating the release of deposed former President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following their arrest by United States forces in Caracas.

The move comes barely two days after Maduro was detained and flown to New York, where he is scheduled to appear before a U.S. court on Monday to face charges related to terrorism and drug trafficking.

Rodríguez disclosed that National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez and Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil would jointly lead the commission, while Information Minister Freddy Ñáñez was also appointed as a member.

In a separate message shared on Telegram, the interim president appealed for renewed diplomatic engagement with Washington, emphasizing the importance of respect, dialogue, and cooperation between both countries.

“We see it as a priority to advance toward a balanced and respectful relationship between Venezuela and the United States,” Rodríguez said, noting that both nations should work toward a “shared agenda of cooperation.”

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan armed forces have formally recognised Rodríguez as interim president, acting in line with a Supreme Court decision that appointed her to oversee a 90-day transitional administration.

Addressing the nation, Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López called for calm and urged citizens to return to their daily routines.

“The nation must proceed along its constitutional path,” he said, encouraging Venezuelans to resume normal economic, work, and academic activities.

However, Padrino López strongly condemned the U.S. operation that resulted in Maduro’s arrest, describing it as a “cowardly act of kidnapping.” He further alleged that the raid led to the deaths of members of Maduro’s security team, as well as military personnel and civilians.

As of Sunday, much of Caracas remained subdued, with many businesses closed and limited activity observed in public markets and pharmacies. The uneasy calm followed several days of political turmoil and uncertainty triggered by the unexpected U.S.-led intervention.
