Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams is set to return to the Australian Open this month after being awarded a wildcard, becoming the oldest woman ever to compete at the season-opening major.

At 45 years old, Williams will feature in the main draw at Melbourne Park for the first time since 2021, adding another milestone to a career that has transformed women’s tennis.

“I’m thrilled to be back in Australia and can’t wait to compete during the Australian summer,” Williams said. “I’ve made so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my career.”

Williams’ illustrious record includes five Wimbledon singles titles and two US Open championships. At the Australian Open, she reached the singles final in 2003 and 2017, while also winning the doubles title on four occasions.

Her upcoming appearance will see her surpass Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she last competed in Melbourne in 2015, setting a new benchmark for age in women’s tennis.

Although Williams has played sparingly in singles in recent seasons, she has meticulously planned her Australian summer return. She is scheduled to begin her campaign at the Auckland Classic next week, followed by the Hobart International, which will serve as her final preparation ahead of Melbourne.

Her comeback gained further momentum after competing at the US Open last year, marking her return after a 16-month absence from the tour.

The tennis community has warmly welcomed Williams’ return, with fellow American Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, describing the moment as truly special.

The Australian Open is set to begin on January 18 and run through February 1.
