Former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe has criticised the Nigeria Football Federation following the national team’s failure to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Anichebe vented his disappointment on Instagram shortly after Nigeria’s dramatic defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sunday’s African playoff final in Rabat. The Super Eagles lost 4–3 on penalties, ending their hopes of returning to the global stage.

The result means Nigeria will miss the World Cup for a second consecutive edition — a development that has triggered frustration among supporters and ex-internationals.

The former Everton forward questioned the current leadership and direction of Nigerian football, insisting that genuine progress will only come when authorities are ready to engage in honest, difficult discussions.

“Real change demands selflessness, long-term thinking, and building foundations that won’t produce instant rewards,” he wrote.

He added, “If we want serious outcomes, we must start having serious conversations that lead to serious decisions.”

With the World Cup campaign over, the Super Eagles will now shift focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco next month. Nigeria finished as runners-up in the previous edition.
