Victor Osimhen celebrated a milestone on Tuesday night after captaining Nigeria for the first time in a competitive match, describing the experience as a childhood dream come true. The 27-year-old led the Super Eagles to a 3-1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Osimhen wore the armband in the Group C clash after head coach Éric Chelle opted to rest regular captain Wilfred Ndidi. Named vice-captain only days before the tournament, Osimhen led from the front as Nigeria secured a comfortable win against the Cranes of Uganda.
“It’s a dream come true for me because I grew up watching the Super Eagles,” Osimhen said after the match, reflecting on the honour of leading the three-time African champions.
The striker’s leadership on the pitch was widely praised by teammates and fans, who commended his calm authority, work rate, and ability to maintain composure under pressure. Nigeria displayed maturity and control, brushing aside Uganda’s resistance to maintain their perfect start in the tournament.
Attention has also focused on Osimhen’s growing goal tally for the national team. Currently playing for Galatasaray, he has scored 32 goals for Nigeria, closing in on the record of 37 goals held by the late Rashidi Yekini.
Despite this, Osimhen downplayed talk of personal milestones, insisting his priority remains the team’s success at AFCON. “The captaincy today gave me a strong sense of belonging. I’m not thinking about equaling or surpassing Rashidi Yekini’s record for now; it’s all about the team,” he said.
“I am focused on helping my team with goals and assists. Hopefully, one day I will get there, but for now, it’s all about Nigeria.”
