Nigerian singer Waje has opened up about her decision to stop communicating with the father of her daughter, revealing the circumstances that led to their estrangement.

Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, Waje recalled getting pregnant at 16 and keeping it secret from her mother until she was five months along. She disclosed that when the pregnancy was eventually made known to the father’s family, he denied responsibility.

According to her, years later, he reached out, apologized, and expressed a desire to be part of their daughter’s life. Waje explained she was not opposed to the idea but requested that he take proper responsibility, especially since he is a Canadian citizen.

She suggested that he file for their daughter, and both parties agreed to conduct a DNA test to formalize the process. However, he allegedly stalled the DNA plan and later disappeared again, cutting off communication. By 2015, Waje said she stopped hearing from him entirely.

The singer emphasized that her decision was motivated by a desire to protect her daughter’s emotional well-being, noting that single parents sometimes deny access not out of spite but to prevent instability in the child’s life.

“At that time, I wasn’t bitter. I was even in a very good relationship. But sometimes when a single parent refuses access, it’s not because of bitterness — it’s because that person can destabilize the child,” she said.

She added that her daughter had no initial interest in citizenship, but requested the child’s father to take formal steps for her. When he failed to follow through on the DNA test, communication ceased.
