Former Manchester United striker and England legend Wayne Rooney has tipped Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice to become the next captain of the England national team, praising his leadership and commanding performance in Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Everton.

Rooney made the remarks after watching Mikel Arteta’s side secure a hard-fought 1-0 win at Goodison Park on Saturday, a result that returned Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table.

According to Gossip News Now , Rooney singled out Rice, describing the 26-year-old as the heartbeat of Arsenal’s midfield. Rice controlled the tempo, shielded the defence, and contributed to attacks, showcasing qualities that Rooney believes make him ready to take on greater responsibility with the national team.

“For me, he’s the one probably waiting for Harry Kane to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said, highlighting Rice’s drive and standout personality.
“Everyone who knows him seems to love him.”

Rooney praised Rice’s all-round display against Everton, noting his intelligence, positional awareness, and technical quality.

“He was all over the pitch. His decision-making, when and where to pass, the foot he used, the detail in his play—it was a pleasure to watch. Absolutely incredible,” Rooney said.

He also lauded Rice’s tactical versatility, explaining how the midfielder seamlessly shifts roles during matches.

“He was splitting centre-backs, taking the ball off them, acting as a third centre-back, and the next minute he’s in the box trying to score,” Rooney added.

Rooney emphasized that some of Rice’s contributions often go unnoticed despite their significance to both club and country.

“Sometimes, some of the stuff he does is a bit underrated,” he noted.

Reaffirming his belief in Rice’s leadership credentials, Rooney concluded:

“He’s the right one to take over from Kane because of his drive and personality. Everyone close to him seems to love him. He’s irreplaceable for England.”
