Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed confidence that his team still has the quality to accomplish “special things” this season, despite a shaky start to their Premier League title defence.

Gossip News Now reports that the reigning English champions will travel to the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, January 8, to face league leaders Arsenal, with Liverpool currently sitting fourth in the table, 14 points adrift of the Gunners.

Slot’s side endured a difficult opening stretch, losing nine of their first 12 matches across all competitions, which dented their ambitions of retaining the Premier League crown.

However, the Reds have since turned a corner, going unbeaten in their last nine games, though the run has been tempered by four draws, including a 0-0 stalemate against Leeds United and a 2-2 draw with Fulham in their opening fixtures of 2026.

Reflecting on the mixed results, Slot admitted that his team had dropped too many points.

“It is nine games unbeaten, but we have definitely had two draws too many,” he said during Wednesday’s pre-match press conference.

Slot, who guided Liverpool to a remarkable league title in his debut season after succeeding Jurgen Klopp, acknowledged that the team is not yet performing to its potential.

“Where are we? I think I’ve said it many times: we aren’t where we want to be,” he admitted.

“But I feel we have a very talented squad. If everyone is available and ready, then I believe we can do special things.”

Liverpool have already shown glimpses of their quality this season, including a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Anfield back in August.

“I think we’ve demonstrated our potential with quite a few impressive wins, but we’ve also had some disappointing draws and defeats,” Slot added.

“We haven’t found consistency, but we’ve beaten some very strong teams, so the talent is certainly there, even if the results haven’t always reflected it.”

Among Liverpool’s standout performances were home victories against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and an emphatic 5-1 away win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

Yet the highs have been offset by concerning lows, with the Reds suffering three-goal defeats at Anfield on three occasions this season against Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and PSV Eindhoven.

As Liverpool prepare to face an in-form Arsenal side, Slot is optimistic his team can rediscover the consistency required to reignite their title challenge and prove that they can indeed achieve something special before the season concludes.
