Senator Mohammed Adamu Aliero, representing Kebbi Central, has strongly criticized the rising trend of politicians attempting to influence election outcomes through bribery and court manipulation after losing at the polls.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a retreat for the Senate and House Committees on Electoral Matters, held at the Legend Hotel, Airport Road, Lagos, Aliero described the practice as a serious abuse that threatens the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.

“It has happened before — a situation where someone loses an election, goes to court, and then bribes his way to get a favorable judgment,” the senator said. “This must stop because it makes a mockery of our electoral system.”

He warned that unless decisive reforms are implemented, such unethical practices would continue to erode public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Aliero revealed that lawmakers had spent more than a year conducting public hearings and legislative reviews aimed at strengthening the nation’s electoral framework.

“We will amend everything that needs to be amended so that there will be no ambiguity, inconsistency, or discrepancies,” he stated. “We have identified several loopholes in the Electoral Act 2022, and we are working diligently to close those gaps to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the future.”

The senator reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to restoring integrity to Nigeria’s electoral process and preventing the manipulation of justice through financial inducement.
