The Obidient Movement has clarified that its political backing for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi is strictly limited to his pursuit of the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The group emphasized that it will not endorse him for a vice-presidential role under any circumstance.
The statement follows reports attributed to the movement’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, suggesting that the group would remain in the ADC even if Obi failed to secure the party’s presidential ticket. Tanko promptly refuted these claims on Saturday, labeling them false and asserting that they were intended to mislead both supporters and the public.
Tanko reaffirmed that the Obidient Movement remains fully focused on Obi’s presidential ambition. “In clear terms, the vision, commitment, and collective determination of the Obidient Movement are entirely devoted to the presidential ambition of Mr. Peter Obi,” he said.
He highlighted that the movement’s nationwide support base, organizational structure, and political strategy are all aligned toward ensuring Obi’s emergence as President of Nigeria.
Moreover, Tanko noted that the movement retains the freedom to associate with any political platform that reflects Obi’s values, principles, and reform-driven leadership vision. “The Obidient Movement may choose to align with any political platform that reflects the character, ideals, and reform-driven leadership vision of Mr. Peter Obi,” he stated.
The group firmly rejected any suggestion that it would mobilize for Obi as a vice-presidential candidate, stressing that such claims contradict its core mission. “To be absolutely clear, the Obidient Movement is not organised to support Peter Obi as a running mate to any presidential candidate. Our support is solely and exclusively for his emergence as President of Nigeria,” the statement read.
Tanko confirmed that the movement is currently backing Obi’s presidential bid within the ADC, but stressed that continued engagement depends on the credibility and fairness of the party’s internal processes.
“At this time, we are supporting Mr. Obi on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he seeks the party’s presidential ticket,” he said.
The movement also warned that any compromise in the process could lead to a reassessment of its stance. “If the process is open, credible, and fair, the Obidient Movement will respect the outcome. But if it is compromised in any way, the movement will take a collective, lawful, and democratic decision that aligns with its guiding principles,” Tanko added.
This clarification aims to quell speculation regarding political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections while reinforcing the movement’s unwavering commitment to Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.
