The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrawn Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan from overseeing the AFCON 2025 quarter-final match between Nigeria and Algeria, set for Saturday in Morocco.
CAF reportedly took action after discovering that Artan wore boots from a non-approved brand during an earlier match in the tournament—an infraction that violated the event’s strict sponsorship rules.
Sources indicate that the breach left CAF with no alternative but to intervene, resulting in Artan’s removal from what is considered one of the standout fixtures of this year’s competition.
AFCON regulations require referees and match officials to fully comply with approved commercial and sponsorship guidelines, especially in the knockout stages.
The decision has surprised many within African football circles. Artan had recently been honoured as Referee of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, a recognition earned through strong and consistent performances across the continent.
Regarded for his calm and firm officiating style, his sudden replacement has sparked widespread discussion among teams and supporters at the tournament.
CAF is expected to appoint a new referee ahead of the last-eight showdown, which will be played at the Grand Stade de Marrakech in Ouahat Sidi Brahim, Morocco.
A full stadium is anticipated as Nigeria and Algeria—two of Africa’s strongest footballing nations—contest a place in the semi-finals at 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 10.
The winner of the match will advance to face either Cameroon or tournament hosts Morocco in the semi-final stage of AFCON 2025.
