Nigerian comedian Freedom Okpetoritse Atsepoyi, widely known as Mr Jollof, has narrated his side of the altercation with social media critic Martins Otese, popularly called VeryDarkMan (VDM), during a flight on Monday, November 17.

In a video posted on his Instagram page, Mr Jollof issued an apology to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), United Nigeria Airlines, his employer—Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori—his family, the passengers on board, and Nigerians at large for the embarrassing incident.

He insisted that he only acted in self‑defence, claiming VDM approached him aggressively and that he “landed 3000mg worth of punches” on the critic while trying to protect himself.

He said, “I want to sincerely apologise to the NCAA, United Nigeria Airlines, and every passenger on that flight. I reacted only to protect myself. You all witnessed the situation, and I am sorry if it disrupted your schedule. Please forgive me. This behaviour is not who I am, and it will not happen again.

“To my dear wife, I know you’re standing by me. To my children, I apologise—Daddy won’t ever behave like this again. And to my boss, I deeply regret this incident; this is not my character.”

Explaining how the confrontation began, Mr Jollof said VDM started provoking him while he was quietly seated in the plane.

According to him, VDM hurled threats such as, “When we get off this plane, I’ll slap you. God punish your father. I can even leave my seat right now and slap you.”
In response, Jollof said he simply told him to “calm down.”

He added that VDM eventually walked toward him, prompting him to defend himself, which escalated into a physical fight.

Addressing why he bit VDM on the chest, Mr Jollof said, “Mike Tyson used the tools God gave him. When you bring a knife to a gunfight, you use whatever you have to survive.”
