Why I Can’t Approach Women When I’m In America – Speed Darlington Opens Up

Controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has revealed that his long stay in the United States significantly affected his self-confidence, particularly as a Black man.

In a recent video shared on social media, the outspoken entertainer reflected on his 23 years in America, lamenting that the experience left him with more struggles than achievements.

According to him, rather than success, his time in the U.S. mostly resulted in multiple arrests and criminal records, which he described as deeply discouraging.

Comparing his experiences abroad to his life in Nigeria, Darlington stated that his major accomplishments, including building his luxury mansion, were achieved through opportunities and earnings made in Nigeria.

“America did not favour me, and I’m not ashamed to say it,” he said. “The only thing I got from 23 years in the U.S. was arrest after arrest. That’s all I can show for it.”

He explained that although he still values having access to the United States to visit family, he no longer desires to live there permanently, as the environment negatively affects his mental and emotional wellbeing.

“I prefer to go for a few days, maybe one week or ten days, then return. American society is not good for my mental and physical health. When I’m there, my self-confidence is very low. I can’t even approach women. I feel lonely most of the time,” he said.

Darlington added that spending extended periods in America often leaves him isolated, which he described as emotionally draining.

He also revealed that fear of being mocked for his accent and doubts about his self-worth make it difficult for him to interact confidently with women while in the U.S.

“If I want to talk to a girl, I start worrying — will she laugh at my accent? Am I good enough? The environment makes a Black man feel like he is nothing and must overprove himself before earning respect. That’s not how I want to live,” he explained.

In contrast, he said Nigeria offers him a sense of belonging, confidence, and purpose, noting that his achievements at home speak for themselves.

“My mansion, with a swimming pool on top, was built with money I made in Nigeria. Even the fight I had with Portable helped me complete the decking of my house. That money changed a lot for me, and that fight happened in Lagos, not Las Vegas,” he stated.

Concluding, Darlington remarked that he would rather live freely in modest conditions than remain in a society where he feels trapped.

“It’s better to be in a forest, climbing trees and being free, than to be in the center of everything and feel caged. I did not leave America with money,” he added.
