Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Segun Sowunmi, has reiterated that the opposition party remains a significant contender and cannot be discounted in the 2027 general elections.
Gossip News Now reports that Sowunmi made the remarks on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s program Politics Today.
Despite the leadership disputes that have challenged the PDP since the 2023 elections, Sowunmi insisted that the party still commands a strong political base that must be taken seriously.
He said:
“PDP has a solid groundswell and cannot be ruled out in the 2027 elections. You just have to wait until we signal. Let the party resolve its internal court matters and stabilise, and then you will understand what it means to have a 27-year legacy in Nigerian politics.
“Then you’ll see the significance behind our slogan, ‘power.’ I’m not claiming we will win, but I guarantee you, PDP can never be ignored.”
Meanwhile, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has formally left the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Gossip News Now reports that the younger Atiku, popularly called Abba, announced his defection on Thursday at the National Assembly.
According to Vanguard, he was welcomed into the APC by Senate Deputy President, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), alongside other APC leaders from the North-East region.
Addressing the move, Abba cited both personal and historical reasons. He also instructed members and coordinators of his political network, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation founded in 2022, to immediately join the APC and support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
