Why Tinubu Thrived as Lagos Governor – Ndume Explains

Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, has offered his perspective on why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recorded notable achievements during his time as governor of Lagos State.

Speaking during a televised interview, the lawmaker argued that the strength of Tinubu’s leadership during that era was largely influenced by the calibre of individuals who worked closely with him.

Former Allies Played Crucial Roles

Ndume suggested that Tinubu’s earlier success was strongly linked to the advisers, strategists, and political associates who surrounded him at the time.

According to him, those individuals contributed significantly to policy direction and governance outcomes during the Lagos administration.

However, he claimed that many of those figures who once formed the backbone of the president’s political network are no longer actively involved in his current circle.

Concern Over Current Inner Circle

The senator expressed concern that the people currently closest to the president may not have the same level of grassroots political understanding.

He alleged that some members of the president’s present circle operate largely within elite environments and may be disconnected from the everyday realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

Ndume suggested that such a gap could limit the administration’s ability to fully understand the challenges affecting citizens across the country.

Lifestyle of Political Elites Criticised

During the interview, Ndume also criticised what he described as the lifestyle patterns of some individuals around the president.

He argued that a number of them spend most of their time in affluent districts such as Ikoyi and Victoria Island in Lagos.

According to him, many within this group frequently travel abroad, particularly to Europe or the United States, where their families reside.

He suggested that such circumstances may reduce their exposure to the social and economic realities within Nigeria.

Tinubu’s Long Political Journey

The Borno senator also reflected on Tinubu’s long-standing involvement in national politics.

He explained that the president had supported several political candidates over the years before eventually pursuing his own presidential ambition.

According to Ndume, earlier efforts involved backing candidates from northern Nigeria, though those attempts did not achieve the intended outcome.

The Emergence of the “Emilokan” Moment

Ndume recalled that Tinubu’s eventual decision to contest for the presidency came after years of political groundwork.

He referenced the now-famous phrase “Emilokan,” meaning “it is my turn,” which became associated with the president’s campaign narrative.

For Ndume, the slogan symbolised the culmination of Tinubu’s long involvement in political strategy and coalition-building.

Call for More Independent Advice

While acknowledging Tinubu’s political experience, Ndume argued that leadership requires advisers who are willing to offer honest feedback.

He expressed the view that a strong administration should include individuals capable of openly challenging decisions when necessary.

According to him, surrounding oneself with people who simply agree with every position may weaken the quality of decision-making.

Commentary and Analysis

Ndume’s remarks highlight a broader debate within Nigerian politics about the importance of advisory networks in governance.

Historically, many successful administrations have relied heavily on trusted teams of experienced political strategists, technocrats, and policy experts.

When those networks change, observers often question whether the new team possesses the same depth of experience and independence.

The senator’s comments also reflect a recurring theme in political discussions: the tension between elite political circles and grassroots realities.

For analysts, the discussion underscores how leadership effectiveness is often linked not only to the decisions of a president or governor but also to the strength, diversity, and independence of the people who advise them.
