The Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress has officially withdrawn its support from Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and declared its allegiance to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The announcement was made by the Congress Chairman, Senator George Sekibo, during Wike’s appreciation visit to Okrika Local Government Area on Saturday.
Sekibo explained that the decision was driven by what he described as Wike’s long-standing commitment and contributions to the Ijaw people across Rivers State. He noted that the group felt compelled to stand with someone who has consistently supported their political and developmental interests.
Describing the ongoing rift between Governor Fubara and Wike as “deeply regrettable,” the senator emphasized that the Ijaw people should not be portrayed as ungrateful. He recalled how Wike played a key role in backing Fubara, an Ijaw son, to emerge as governor.
“We are a people who value loyalty and gratitude,” Sekibo said. “That is why we made the decision to step away and align with you. You have done a great deal for the Ijaw people in Rivers State, and we are prepared to stand with you and follow your direction.”
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Okrika Local Government Council, Akuro Tobin, described Wike as his political mentor, crediting him with supporting numerous indigenes of the area into elective and appointed positions.
Tobin assured the minister that the people of Okrika — including youths, women, and community leaders — remain firmly behind Wike and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In his response, Wike expressed appreciation for the show of solidarity, thanking the community for its continued support. He praised President Tinubu as a leader who honors his commitments and encouraged the people of Okrika to keep backing individuals known for integrity and reliability.
