The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has spoken about the political resistance he faced while serving as governor of Rivers State, alleging that a former cabinet member under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari actively worked against his administration.
Addressing supporters from both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party during an event in Ahoada East, Wike described the political climate during Buhari’s presidency as extremely challenging. He suggested that certain forces from within his own state sought to slow down his government’s progress, creating obstacles to development efforts.
Although he did not directly identify the individual, Wike claimed that the former minister made repeated attempts to frustrate his administration’s plans. Despite the alleged interference, he maintained that his government remained determined and succeeded in executing several important projects.
Wike also used the opportunity to emphasise that leadership goes beyond initiating infrastructure contracts. He explained that governance demands the ability to manage relationships, settle disputes, and carefully navigate political tensions, noting that these skills were essential in overcoming the pressures he encountered at the time.
Observers believe his remarks were likely aimed at Rotimi Amaechi, who previously served as Minister of Transportation during Buhari’s administration and has long been regarded as a political rival within Rivers State.
Despite the difficulties he described, Wike credited resilience and strategic focus for enabling his administration to deliver on its promises and sustain its development agenda.
