Wike-Aligned PDP Faults Makinde’s Comments, Describes Them as Misleading

Fresh tension has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a faction linked to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike openly criticized comments made by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a recent media appearance.

The group, which operates under the National Caretaker Working Committee associated with Wike and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, accused the governor of presenting an inaccurate account of the party’s internal situation. Their reaction was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed.

Before addressing the controversy directly, the statement opened with goodwill messages to Nigerians and members of the PDP as the country celebrates the Christmas and New Year season. The greetings were also extended to key organs of the party, including the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT).

The faction then turned its attention to what it described as misleading claims surrounding the party’s leadership issues. Specifically, it rejected suggestions that the Oyo convention, which produced Kabiru Turaki as the party’s National Chairman, had been dismissed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the group, party members should examine the facts surrounding the PDP’s internal challenges rather than relying on narratives they believe are intended to confuse supporters and the wider public.

The statement also addressed arguments that the disputes within the party fall strictly under internal political affairs. The faction insisted that the ongoing disagreements are still matters that can be examined and resolved through the judicial system.

Criticism of Governor Makinde formed a central part of the response. The Wike-aligned leadership accused him of offering comments that were inaccurate and unhelpful to efforts aimed at resolving the party’s internal disagreements.

In their view, the governor’s remarks suggested a misunderstanding of the legal and constitutional dimensions of the crisis currently affecting the opposition party.

The faction also pointed to what it described as contradictions in the position of rival groups within the PDP. It questioned why those who previously insisted the conflict was purely internal had earlier approached a court in Oyo State seeking judicial intervention.

Another claim challenged by the group involved reports that certain factions had received recognition from the electoral body. According to the statement, those claims had now been exposed as untrue and were part of attempts to pressure the electoral commission.

The Wike-aligned leadership maintained that its position is firmly rooted in respect for constitutional provisions, existing court judgments and the rule of law.

As the statement concluded, the group urged Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for unity within the country and stability within the PDP as the party works to overcome its current divisions.

Commentary and Analysis

The renewed exchange between factions within the PDP highlights the depth of the leadership struggle currently affecting Nigeria’s main opposition party. Disagreements over legitimacy, legal interpretations and party conventions have created competing narratives about who truly controls the party’s structures.

Governor Makinde is widely seen as part of a bloc seeking a different direction for the party’s leadership, while the Wike-aligned faction insists its approach follows constitutional procedures and court rulings.

Such public disputes can have significant consequences for political parties, especially opposition groups preparing for future elections. Internal fragmentation often weakens their ability to present a united front against ruling parties.

For the PDP, resolving these disagreements may determine whether it can regain political momentum in the coming electoral cycles or continue to struggle with internal divisions that distract from its broader political objectives.
