The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) will remain a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a media interaction, Nyesom Wike dismissed growing speculation about the party’s possible decline, insisting that the PDP will not only appear on the ballot but also maintain its influence across various regions of the country.
Gossip News Now reports that the former Rivers State governor emphasized that despite losing presidential power since 2015, the party has continued to function and retain relevance at multiple levels of governance.
Shift in Strategy: Building Strength From the Grassroots
Rather than placing all attention on the presidency, Wike advised party members to redirect their focus toward strengthening structures at the state and local levels. He stressed that long-term political success depends on a solid foundation beyond the top seat.
He suggested that a party’s strength is measured not just by who occupies the presidency, but by its presence and control across different tiers of government. In his view, grassroots influence remains a critical factor in sustaining political relevance.
At one point, he noted that rushing into selecting a presidential candidate without adequate preparation could weaken the party’s chances. He implied that careful planning and strategic alignment are essential before making such a crucial decision.
Warning Against Premature Presidential Ambitions
Nyesom Wike also highlighted the importance of readiness—both mentally and organizationally—when contesting for the nation’s highest office. He indicated that success at the national level requires more than ambition, pointing to the need for coordinated efforts and strong internal cohesion.
He cautioned that securing victory at the top without corresponding strength in other political layers could leave the party vulnerable and limit its overall effectiveness.
Internal Challenges Still a Major Concern
The PDP continues to grapple with internal disagreements, with various factions reportedly holding separate meetings and engaging in legal battles over leadership positions. These divisions have raised concerns about the party’s unity as the 2027 elections approach.
Despite these challenges, Wike maintained that the party still has the capacity to recover and reposition itself, provided members are willing to work collectively toward common goals.
Analysis: Can PDP Rebuild Before 2027?
The statements by Nyesom Wike reflect a strategic attempt to shift the narrative around the PDP—from uncertainty to resilience. By emphasizing grassroots strength, he highlights a pathway that could help the party rebuild its influence over time.
However, the lingering internal crisis remains a significant hurdle. Without unity and clear leadership, efforts to strengthen the party at lower levels may face obstacles.
Ultimately, the PDP’s performance in 2027 will depend not only on its presidential candidate but also on its ability to resolve internal conflicts, rebuild trust, and establish a cohesive structure nationwide.
