The senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has accused the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, of refusing to engage with elected officials responsible for the territory.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday night, Kingibe assessed Wike’s performance as minister, acknowledging some progress but criticizing what she views as his consistent neglect of legal procedures.
She noted that while the minister has made visible contributions, particularly in road development, he often acts without proper adherence to established legal frameworks.
Kingibe recalled sending a letter to Wike to commend the rehabilitation of her street, Kunene Close, explaining that her gesture was wrongly interpreted as political endorsement rather than appreciation for a neglected road finally being fixed.
“Whenever anyone does something worth acknowledging, I will acknowledge it. That letter was simply to appreciate the repair of a road that had long been abandoned — not because it was my personal street,” she clarified.
Despite her commendation, Kingibe emphasized that her primary duty as a legislator is oversight.
“The minister has made some positive efforts, but many times he does not follow the rule of law. It’s my responsibility to point out where he falls short. None of this is personal,” she added.
The lawmaker expressed frustration over the lack of regular consultations between the FCT minister and elected representatives, noting that past ministers held monthly meetings to address residents’ needs and strategize collectively.
“It’s almost three years since he assumed office, and I have never sat with him in any formal engagement,” she said, highlighting ongoing issues such as security challenges and waste management failures in the territory.
Kingibe expressed optimism that the coming year would usher in improved collaboration between the minister and lawmakers, stressing that such partnership is vital for delivering quality governance to FCT residents.
