A fresh development has deepened the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a faction linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced disciplinary actions against several senior figures in the party.
The group declared that multiple prominent members — including state governors and former national officers — had been expelled over what it described as activities that undermined the party’s constitution and unity.
According to Gossip News Now, the decisions were taken during a meeting organised by the faction’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.
Among the politicians affected by the announcement are Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
The list of those removed also includes senior party figures such as former Board of Trustees chairman Adolphus Wabara, former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, and the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Taofeek Arapaja, alongside several other members.
Allegations Behind the Disciplinary Measures
Officials within the faction said the actions were necessary because the affected members allegedly ignored court rulings and participated in what they described as an unauthorised party convention.
Presenting the recommendation for the disciplinary measures, the faction’s Acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman argued that the decisions were aimed at protecting the party’s internal order and constitutional structure.
During the meeting, the party leadership emphasised that political organisations must operate within legal frameworks rather than through actions that could create confusion among members.
Resolutions Announced at the NEC Meeting
Apart from the expulsions, the meeting produced several other resolutions affecting the party’s structure and administration.
Some of the key decisions included:
-
Dissolution of party executive committees in several states
-
Approval for caretaker committees to oversee affected state structures
-
Immediate replacement of vacant leadership positions by deputies
-
Ratification of new acting leadership roles within the National Working Committee
The faction also confirmed the appointment of Mohammed Abdulrahman as the party’s Acting National Chairman.
State Structures Affected
As part of the restructuring measures, state party leadership structures in multiple regions were dissolved. The affected states include:
-
Bauchi
-
Oyo
-
Zamfara
-
Lagos
-
Ekiti
-
Yobe
The faction directed the National Working Committee to organise fresh congresses in these states in order to rebuild party structures.
In addition, the NEC approved the leadership of the Edo State PDP executive committee led by Barrister Nosa Ogieva.
Constitutional and Legal Actions
Another major resolution from the meeting involved steps to reclaim legislative seats from politicians who have allegedly defected from the party.
Party officials said legal processes would be initiated in line with constitutional provisions that address defections by elected representatives.
The faction cited relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution that empower political parties to challenge such defections.
Plans for Party Reconciliation and Reform
Despite the disciplinary actions, the meeting also acknowledged the need to rebuild unity within the party.
To address internal divisions, the leadership announced a reconciliation programme aimed at restoring trust among party members across the country.
Another initiative announced during the meeting was a nationwide membership verification exercise intended to strengthen party organisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Commentary and Analysis
The latest expulsions highlight the depth of the leadership struggle currently affecting the PDP. Factional disputes within major political parties often emerge during periods of leadership transition or disagreement over strategy.
In this case, the conflict appears to revolve around competing interpretations of party legitimacy and constitutional authority.
Political analysts suggest that the PDP’s ability to resolve its internal divisions will be crucial if it hopes to maintain its status as one of Nigeria’s major opposition forces.
While disciplinary measures may reinforce organisational rules, they can also intensify factional rivalry if not followed by meaningful dialogue.
As the party moves toward the next election cycle, the outcome of these internal battles could shape its future political influence across the country.
