The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has raised alarms over politicians allegedly trying to gain access to the ₦600 billion left in Rivers State coffers by former Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.).
Wike claimed that politicians from other states have been visiting Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, motivated by the desire to tap into the substantial funds.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at their legislative quarters along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the minister alleged that some visitors employ flattery as a tactic, publicly praising the governor—who recently switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC)—while secretly maneuvering to secure a share of the resources.
He said, “If you want to make money in Rivers today, the announcement of ₦600 billion has caught the attention of opportunistic politicians. Nigerian politicians like Rivers money—it’s no secret. Those who come now are here to collect.”
Wike added that attacks directed at him have been weaponized by these politicians to curry favor with the state government, suggesting that personal gains have become the driving motive.
“They will now tell people, ‘Wike’s time is over,’ and use that as justification to access the funds. But let it be clear: no one can take advantage of Rivers resources just because of me,” he stated.
The FCT minister warned that the public revelation of the funds has “opened the door” to opportunists, whom he described as fraudsters, eager to exploit the situation. “By disclosing the ₦600 billion, the path is now visible to those waiting to benefit. They know where to position themselves,” he added.
