Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed details of a private meeting with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed concerning the recent convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Nyesom Wike, the Bauchi governor personally reached out and later visited him in Abuja in a bid to persuade him to delay the party’s convention. The appeal, he said, was aimed at allowing more time for internal reconciliation among party stakeholders.
Gossip News Now reports that the meeting took place late at night after prior communication between both political figures. Wike explained that although the request was presented as a step toward unity, he firmly rejected the idea, insisting that postponing the convention at that stage would have been inappropriate.
Why Wike Declined the Request
Explaining his stance, Nyesom Wike suggested that the party had already passed the point where such a delay would be beneficial. He pointed out that earlier opportunities for consensus had not been utilized, making a last-minute postponement impractical.
He likened the situation to a strategic game, implying that decisions already taken could not simply be reversed without consequences. In his view, moving forward with the convention was necessary to avoid prolonging internal uncertainty within the party.
At one point, he indicated that it would have been unreasonable to halt the process after previous advice and recommendations had been ignored. The minister emphasized that consistency in decision-making was crucial for maintaining credibility.
Open Door for Reconciliation Within PDP
Despite rejecting the proposal, Wike maintained that reconciliation within the party remains possible. He expressed optimism that members can still come together and resolve their differences ahead of future elections.
He stressed that the PDP still holds significant political relevance and has the capacity to compete effectively, particularly as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
Political Tensions and Legal Dimensions
The FCT minister also referenced the legal and procedural complexities surrounding the convention, noting that various actions had already been taken by different factions within the party. These developments, he implied, contributed to his decision not to support any delay.
He highlighted that certain groups had proceeded with their plans despite earlier disagreements, further complicating the situation and limiting the room for compromise at that stage.
Analysis: PDP’s Internal Struggles and Future Outlook
The revelations from Nyesom Wike provide insight into the ongoing internal challenges within the PDP. The disagreement over the convention reflects deeper divisions that could influence the party’s performance in upcoming elections.
While calls for unity continue, the effectiveness of reconciliation efforts will likely determine whether the party can reposition itself as a strong opposition force. The willingness of key figures like Wike and Bala Mohammed to engage in dialogue may be a positive sign, but translating that into lasting unity remains a critical task.
Ultimately, the PDP’s ability to navigate these internal dynamics will play a major role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the years ahead.
