Wike Says His Continued Stay in PDP Upsets Makinde

Spread the love

Nyesom Wike has dismissed speculation that he plans to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he intends to stay within the opposition party despite ongoing political disagreements.

The former governor of Rivers State made the remarks during a media engagement held in Port Harcourt, where he addressed questions surrounding his political future and relationships with other party leaders.

Disagreement With Makinde

During the discussion, Wike suggested that his continued membership in the PDP appears to be a point of irritation for Seyi Makinde.

According to the FCT minister, the situation has generated tension among some party figures who expected him to take a different political path.

He maintained that, despite the speculation surrounding his political moves, he currently has no immediate intention of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Claim of Widespread Political Influence

Wike also spoke about his political reach within the PDP, arguing that his influence is not limited to Rivers State.

He asserted that many party members and political actors across several states remain aligned with his leadership. In his view, a decision by him to switch parties could encourage others to make similar moves.

Among the states he referenced were Benue State, Plateau State, Abia State, and Edo State.

Leadership Beyond Elected Positions

The minister emphasized that political influence should not be measured solely by holding official positions.

According to him, leadership within a party can exist beyond elected offices such as legislative seats or local government chairmanships.

He argued that individuals may still shape political decisions and direction even without occupying formal government roles.

Staying in the Party by Choice

Wike reiterated that his continued presence in the PDP is a deliberate decision rather than a temporary arrangement.

He suggested that this choice has unsettled some party stakeholders, including Governor Makinde, who may have expected a different outcome regarding his political alignment.

Commentary and Analysis

The remarks highlight the ongoing tension within the PDP, where internal rivalries among influential figures have repeatedly shaped the party’s dynamics.

Political analysts note that Wike remains one of the most powerful figures associated with the party despite serving in a federal administration led by the rival APC.

His decision to remain in the PDP while maintaining relationships across multiple political camps reflects the complex alliances that often define Nigerian politics.

If the internal disagreements within the party continue unresolved, they could influence future electoral strategies and alliances as Nigeria gradually moves toward the next election cycle.
