Fresh tensions have surfaced within Nigeria’s opposition politics as a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike insists that several senior party figures remain expelled from the party.
The group made its position known through a statement issued by its National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, who urged the public and party members to disregard individuals he described as illegitimate representatives of the party. According to the faction, the affected figures were removed from the party structure following a decision taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) in November over allegations bordering on misconduct and activities considered harmful to the party.
The faction maintained that the disciplinary action was implemented under provisions contained in the party’s amended 2017 constitution. It also stressed that the move was not arbitrary but rather a formal decision taken after internal processes within the party leadership structure.
Among the notable personalities mentioned in the expulsion decision are prominent political figures including Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, and Dauda Lawal. The list also contains several former high-ranking officials and long-standing members of the party.
Other individuals named in the announcement include former Akwa Ibom State governor Udom Emmanuel, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, party chieftain Bode George, and acting national chairman Umar Iliya Damagum, alongside several other party stakeholders.
In addition, a number of other figures were listed in the disciplinary announcement, including Okechukwu Obiechina, Emmanuel Ogidi, Emmanuel Ebien, Suleiman Kadade Mohammed, Sunmaila Adamu Bunza, Koshoedo Setonji, Daniel Woyengikuro, and Umar Sani.
The Wike-aligned group also criticised recent political meetings organised by some of the affected members, particularly a gathering held in Ibadan. According to the faction, the meeting should not be mistaken for an official party convention and holds no formal authority within the recognised leadership structure of the PDP.
Gossip News Now reports that the faction warned that individuals presenting themselves as newly elected national officials of the party without recognition from the established leadership should be treated as impostors.
The statement further emphasised that members and supporters of the party should remain aligned with what the faction described as the legitimate constitutional leadership of the PDP while ignoring any declarations or communiqués issued by the expelled figures.
Commentary and Analysis
The renewed dispute highlights the deep divisions currently affecting the PDP, a party that has faced repeated internal struggles since losing federal power in 2015. Analysts note that factional disagreements within major political parties often intensify ahead of electoral cycles, especially when influential figures compete for strategic control of party structures.
The disagreement between the Wike-aligned bloc and other senior party members underscores broader questions about leadership legitimacy and internal democracy within the opposition party. Political observers believe that unresolved conflicts could weaken the party’s cohesion and affect its preparedness for future elections.
If the leadership dispute continues, the PDP may face further fragmentation unless both sides find a path toward reconciliation or an internal settlement that restores unity among its influential stakeholders.
