Without Music I Might Have Ended Up in Prison – Rapper Jeriq Opens Up

Nigerian rapper Jeremiah Chukwuebuka Ani, better known by his stage name Jeriq, has revealed that music played a crucial role in steering his life away from prison.

In an open conversation with YouTuber The Smallie, Jeriq disclosed that he had been arrested on several occasions in the past for different offences, stressing that his involvement in music helped pull him away from destructive habits.

According to Gossip News Now , the Enugu-born artiste explained that channeling his energy into music kept him distracted from vices that could have ruined his future.

Reflecting on his past, Jeriq shared that encounters with various security agencies left visible marks on him.

“I have been arrested several times by law enforcement agencies because of vices. If you check my hands and legs, you will notice marks from handcuffs. I have been arrested by anti-cult officers and the police before,” he said.

Expressing gratitude for his career path, the rapper added, “I thank God for music. Without it, I would most likely be in prison today.”

Jeriq also spoke about the difficulties he faced after relocating to Lagos in pursuit of his music career. He noted that at the time, he lacked access to established artists, making collaborations almost impossible.

Despite the early setbacks, the rapper said he remained confident that performing in his native Igbo language would eventually earn him global recognition.

Recalling a turning point in his journey, he explained, “When I first came to Lagos, I wasn’t well known, so I didn’t have opportunities to meet other artists. Collaborations were very hard to secure because I was still upcoming.

“Things later changed when I returned in 2021. That was when I was able to release a collaborative EP with Dremo titled East and West.”
