Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to Nine Months in Jail for Smoking Cannabis on Stage

American hip-hop star Wiz Khalifa has reportedly been handed a nine-month prison sentence by a Romanian court after admitting to using cannabis during a live concert performance.

The controversy stems from an appearance the rapper made at the Beach, Please! Festival, a large music event held in Costinești, Romania. Authorities say the incident occurred during the show when Khalifa allegedly consumed cannabis while performing in front of the audience.

Originally, the case had resulted in a monetary penalty of 3,600 Romanian lei. However, the decision was later challenged, and an appeals court overturned the earlier ruling, replacing it with a custodial sentence.

The ruling was issued while the rapper was outside Romania. Reports indicate that the judgment was delivered in his absence, as he had recently been seen performing in the United States, including a stage appearance alongside Gunna in California. Meanwhile, Khalifa has continued posting updates through social media platforms and Twitch from his home.

Romanian authorities first confronted the artist following his concert on July 13, 2024. After the performance, he was temporarily detained and questioned by law enforcement officials regarding the alleged drug use.

Prosecutors later filed charges related to possession of drugs for personal use. According to their account, more than 18 grams of cannabis were found in his possession, and part of the substance was reportedly used during the stage performance itself.

Officials argued that the act went beyond private consumption because it occurred publicly during a concert attended by many young fans. The court described the incident as a deliberate display that could encourage drug use among younger audiences.

The situation has sparked debate among legal analysts. Romanian criminologist Vlad Zaha suggested that the chances of the United States extraditing the rapper to serve the sentence are extremely slim.

According to Zaha, multiple factors make extradition improbable. These include Khalifa’s financial resources, his access to legal support and political connections in the United States, and the broader difference between Romanian and American laws regarding cannabis use.

He further explained that although Romanian prosecutors could formally request extradition, the likelihood of American authorities approving such a move is minimal. In his view, sending the rapper to Constanța to serve the sentence would be highly unlikely.

Another complication stems from the legal landscape in the United States. In several American states, cannabis consumption is permitted under certain regulations, creating a contrast with Romania’s stricter drug laws.

Beyond the legal battle, Wiz Khalifa remains one of the most recognizable figures in global hip-hop. Known for hit songs such as Black and Yellow, See You Again, and Young, Wild & Free, the rapper has built a career spanning more than a decade.

His association with cannabis culture has also been widely publicized. In fact, Khalifa launched his own marijuana brand in 2016, reinforcing his long-standing openness about cannabis use.

Commentary and Analysis

The case illustrates how drastically laws concerning cannabis can vary between countries. Actions that might be tolerated or even legal in some regions can carry severe penalties in others, particularly when they occur in public settings.

For international performers, this highlights the risks of navigating different legal systems while touring abroad. What may seem normal or culturally accepted in one country can become a criminal offense in another jurisdiction.

The situation also raises questions about the practicality of enforcing such rulings across borders. Without extradition, enforcement of the sentence may remain largely symbolic unless the artist returns to Romania or a country willing to cooperate with the ruling.

At the same time, Romanian authorities appear to be signaling a firm stance on public drug use, especially when it occurs during events attended by large numbers of young people.
