American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania after admitting to smoking cannabis during a live performance.
Gossip News Now reports that the incident occurred last year at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti.
A Romanian appeals court overturned an earlier fine of 3,600 lei and ruled that the rapper must serve a custodial sentence.
The judgment was delivered in absentia, as Wiz Khalifa was recently seen performing in California alongside Gunna and has been sharing updates from his home via social media and Twitch.
Authorities had briefly detained and questioned the rapper after the concert on July 13, 2024.
Prosecutors charged him with possession of drugs for personal use, stating that he was found with over 18 grams of cannabis and smoked some of it on stage.
The court described the act as a public display of illegal behaviour before a predominantly young audience, warning that it could promote drug use among youths. Officials also labelled the action as deliberate and attention-seeking.
Speaking to the BBC, Romanian criminologist Vlad Zaha said there is little to no chance that the United States would extradite Wiz Khalifa to Romania, describing the prison sentence as excessively harsh.
Zaha cited several factors that make extradition unlikely, including the rapper’s wealth, strong legal and political connections, Romania’s weak bargaining position, and the differing legal stance on cannabis in the United States.
He added that although Romanian authorities may submit a formal extradition request, it is highly unlikely that Wiz Khalifa would be sent to Constanța to serve the sentence.
The rapper is based in the US, where cannabis is legal in several states, and he maintains strong legal and political ties.
Wiz Khalifa, famous for hit songs such as Black and Yellow, See You Again, and Young, Wild & Free, has long been open about his cannabis use and owns a marijuana brand launched in 2016.
