A former Rivers South-East Senatorial District lawmaker, Olaka Nwogu, has weighed in on the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, attributing the crisis to leaders failing to honour agreements.
Speaking on Channels Television’s programme, Sunday Politics, Nwogu said the conflict in the state stems largely from Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s refusal to adhere to a pact brokered by President Bola Tinubu.
“I think essentially what is happening, as unfortunate as it is, is the consequence of leaders not keeping their word and commitments,” Nwogu stated.
He recalled that the governor failed to follow through on the initial agreement facilitated by President Tinubu, causing the arrangement to collapse.
“There was a first agreement that President Bola Tinubu brokered. But because the governor did not honour it, the pact fell apart. Some argued that the President had no authority to broker it, yet we all initially submitted ourselves to that eight-point plan,” Nwogu explained.
He further noted that the fallout from the breakdown of the agreement led to Supreme Court observations that highlighted governance challenges in Rivers, prompting the President to impose a state of emergency to stabilize the state.
“During and after the emergency, discussions were held across the state to restore political harmony. Leaders collectively approached the President, who acted as a guarantor for a new understanding,” Nwogu added.
He emphasized that the ongoing issues in Rivers are directly linked to a failure to respect agreements. “You cannot govern a complex state like Rivers if you cannot adhere to the commitments you make,” Nwogu concluded.
