The family of late gospel singer Omije Ojumi has strongly refuted online claims suggesting that they were soliciting financial assistance for her burial, warning that legal action will be taken against anyone spreading such allegations without proof.

According to reports, the singer’s brother-in-law, Femi Eretan, addressed the matter while speaking to guests during the service of songs and artistes’ night held on Wednesday.

Eretan condemned a viral video circulated by a self-acclaimed prophet, which alleged that the family had been publicly begging for burial funds and appealing to gospel artistes to handle the funeral arrangements.

He described the claims as false and damaging, firmly insisting that the family never made such requests. He further warned that any individual making these allegations must present concrete evidence or face legal consequences.

In his words, he said:

“I am from Ondo State and I understand the rudiments of the law. Anyone who claims that the family begged for burial funds must provide proof.”

Eretan also provided clarification regarding the earlier suspension of burial plans suggested by some colleagues of the late singer, explaining that the family eventually decided to take full responsibility for the burial arrangements after differences arose with members of the gospel music community.

He stressed that there is no internal disagreement within the family, stating that they remain united and composed, even though “many people are crying more than the bereaved.”

According to him, immediately after Omije Ojumi’s passing, the family notified relatives from both her paternal and maternal sides, as well as community elders, in line with tradition.

He added that the family head, Wale Akinaanu, initially supported the idea proposed by some artistes to conduct the burial within a week. However, due to his fragile health and the emotional toll of the moment, the plan could not be implemented.

Subsequent family meetings, he said, led to a revised decision regarding the burial arrangements.

Despite the controversy, Eretan expressed deep appreciation to artistes and well-wishers who paid tribute to the late singer and demonstrated support by attending the service of songs.
